RUSSIAN BRILLIANTS®
Russian Brilliants® are a laboratory-grown stone that is classified as a diamond simulant. A simulated diamond simulates or imitates the appearance of a natural diamond, but does not duplicate the characteristic chemical and physical properties of the natural gemstone. While Russian Brilliants® simulated diamonds do an excellent job of duplicating the appearance of a natural diamond, they are not the same thing as a natural diamond. This applies to all simulated diamonds on the market today including all of our online competitors.
We buy only the finest quality rough material available in the world. And every stone is hand cut and faceted to ideal proportions to most accurately replicate the look of a fine quality natural diamond or colored gemstone. There are vast differences in both the chemical quality of simulated diamond rough material and how well they are cut. It’s easy to distinguish Russian Brilliants® simulated diamonds from ordinary CZ, its mostly in the cutting and proportions Russian Brilliants® generally have smaller tables than ordinary machine cut CZ. The facet edges are all very crisp, like a natural diamond. And the girdle is a smooth flat surface with a crisp upper and lower edge. Russian Brilliants® are also guaranteed never to fade or discolor.
Russian Brilliants® have their origins in a synthetic material first developed by the French in 1960 and later perfected by the Russian’s in 1973 for use as an optical material in their space program. This early material was the original synthetic cubic zirconia. Because of its optical properties it soon began being used in inexpensive jewelry. However it was poorly cut and yellowed in sunlight so it was not suitable for setting better quality jewelry. Over the last 40 years there have been many advances in the chemical and optical quality of this man made material.

STANDARD CUBIC ZIRCONIA
At times man-made gems are more beautiful (rainbow affect) than the natural diamonds they imitate. Standard CZ will take on a pale grayish tone when exposed to sunlight over a period of time. This does not happen with Russian Brilliants®. Unlike a naturally formed mined diamond, almost all CZ components are purer and the molecules gather in ideal conditions. Couple this with an unsophisticated machine cut manufacturing process and you arrive at the standard cubic zirconia.

MOISSANITE
While technically a synthetic diamond, Moissanite is a popular diamond substitute. The appearance of Moisssanite is similar to mined diamonds. Although, upon closer examination, Moissanite is usually identifiable. Unfortunately Moissanite, especially larger stones have a greenish gray color cast. Because it is doubly refractive, Moissanite is cut differently than natural diamonds. This creates a strong visual effect known as birefringence, which acts on the stone's back facets, creating a drunken or blurred image. The double refractive index diminishes the illusion of being a natural diamond. Be sure to inspect Moissanite stones in natural light, and if possible compare it to a natural diamond. In addition, Moissanite has 2.5 times the dispersive power of a natural diamond. This creates what is referred to as the disco ball effect. Some think the excessive fire is beautiful, while others think it makes Moissanite look fake and cheap.
